“Ugh. This doesn’t feel fun,” I say to my Business Partner, mid-brainstorm. The tension in my body reflects the serious nature of our work.

In my 2021 New Years’ intentions, I’d set a goal of allowing “work to feel like play.” Yet, I’d never had a model for what that looked like.

Even working at McDonald’s at age 14, it was so serious. I had to be on time for my 6 AM shift. I had to avoid burning myself on the fry machine. I had to ensure the orders were perfect to avoid lost revenue…and so on.

Every Corporate job since then, I’ve been Ms.Super-Seriously-Invested. The first one to show up and the last one to leave. Eventually, deciding there had to be a better mindset to approach my work.

I wanted my heart-centered work to feel different. I wanted to believe it’s possible for entrepreneurship to feel easeful and fun.

Then I remembered the words taught in my EMRES training: “EMRES is not a technique. It’s a way of life.”

So, in the moment of the highest tension, I asked my business partner to pause for a minute and gave myself permission to close my eyes.

I feel stabbing tension in my lower spine.

There’s pinching in my left shoulder blade.

My shoulders feel really, really heavy.

“DO NOTHING. Let the sensations change.” I tell myself silently.

Ah. Relief.

About a minute later, I feel like I can breathe again and sigh.

Feeling much softer, I look at Edmond and gently nod my head and smirk that we got so off track.

Let’s play a game, he says.

“YES, AND…” he writes on our big brainstorm post it in orange letters.

He explains, “Anything either of us says, we respond with ‘yes, and..’ to find a way to add to what each other says without saying ‘no.’

I laugh and grab a purple marker and begin to jot down ideas on post-its.

I can tell the tension has resolved as the creative energy flows through me again.
